Hong Kong released more details Monday on China’s new national security law, which, among other things, will enable authorities to prevent people under investigation from leaving Hong Kong.

Under the legislation, secession and sedition will be punishable by imprisonment up to life. Foreign and Taiwan political organizations and agents will be required to provide information on any activities that are related to Hong Kong.

Authorities can enter and search places for evidence, as well as prevent people under investigation from leaving Hong Kong. Authorities may also confiscate any proceeds related to offenses endangering national security.

While authorities have insisted the law will only target “troublemakers,” critics say that law is aimed at crushing dissent. Britain has stated that the law is a “clear and serious” violation of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.
