Former first lady of Guatemala and presidential candidate Sandra Torres was arrested on Monday in her home near Guatemala City for breaking campaign finance rules and for unlawful association. Torres and her political party, National Unity of Hope (UNE), have called the arrest politically motivated.
Torres has thrice run unsuccessfully for the presidency of Guatemala. She has been described as the “power behind the throne” during her ex-husband’s presidency. She formerly enjoyed immunity from prosecution as a presidential candidate but was defeated and lost that privilege on August 11.
The Attorney General alleges UNE received USD $3.5 million in undeclared financing during the 2015 election. UNE currently holds the largest number of seats in Congress.
