The European Commission proposed a Green Deal Plan aimed at sustainability for the European economy on Tuesday. The plan to tackle climate change is to “transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 and where economic growth is decoupled from resource use.”

The Commission will propose the first European Climate Law by March of next year.

The “roadmap” proposed includes components of financing this green economy and making sure the transition is inclusive and just. The plan also aims to mobilize research and foster innovation.

President Ursula von der Leyen said:

The European Green Deal is our new growth strategy—for a growth that gives back more than it takes away. It shows how to transform our way of living and working, of producing and consuming so that we live healthier and make our businesses innovative. … By showing the rest of the world how to be sustainable and competitive, we can convince other countries to move with us.
European leaders will meet Thursday at a summit to begin discussions on the plan.
