Tesla’s upcoming car factory in Germany might be delayed after environmental groups Thursday obtained a temporary injunction against construction.
The factory, originally slated to be operational by July 2021, has been subject to litigation by environmental groups. A lower court in Frankfurt an der Oder initially ruled in favor of Tesla. Upon appeal, a higher court Thursday granted an injunction until the court can fully review the environmental groups’ evidence.
Environmentalists argue that the deforestation required to build this factory will endanger the habitat for local reptiles. While Tesla was granted permission by Germany’s environment ministry to start “preparations” for the factory, actual construction cannot begin till local approval is granted, pending further environmental studies. After receiving hundreds of complaints from local citizens and environmental groups, the future of the plant remains uncertain.
This factory, located in Grünheide, Germany, would be Tesla’s fourth “Gigafactory.” Tesla became the world’s most valuable carmaker in 2020, and Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, hopes to produce 20 million vehicles in 2021. These Gigafactories represent Tesla’s efforts to expand rapidly into widespread markets, including Germany and China.
