French President Emanuel Macron said Monday that the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov on French territory was not a political decision but a part of an ongoing judicial investigation.
While addressing the alleged “false accusations” against France, he stated on X (formerly Twitter) that it is “up to the judges to decide” and “France is more than anything attached to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and the spirit of enterprise. It will remain so.”
Durov was detained on Saturday by French police personnel when his private jet landed at Le Bourget Airport outside of Paris. He has been arrested for violating laws regulating drug trafficking and child sexual content, along with the promotion of terrorism and cyberbullying by failing to implement adequate moderation measures.
Telegram posted in support of its president and CEO on Sunday claiming that Durov has “nothing to hide” and that the messenger platform abides by the laws of EU, including the Digital Services Act. The platform’s moderation is “withing industry standards and is constantly improving,” the post read, refuting the allegation on Telegram’s inadequate moderation standards by the French authorities.
Durov, who was born in Russia, fled the country when he was forced by the Russian government to cancel the opposition political groups on his social network named VKontakte (VK) and later to hand over users’ personal data, both of which he refused. He left VK after facing conflict with the other owners of the company. He founded Telegram along with his brother, Nikolai Durov in 2013.
The app supports end-to-end encrypted messages and allows users to create channels for further dissemination of information. Due to its heightened encrypted system of messaging, the platform has allegedly been used to spread “disinformation” and “conspiracies.”
