Protestors in France Saturday demonstrated for a seventh day against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform plan, which has been widely disputed across the country since his announcement of the plan in January.
According to the Confederation of Labor (CGT), a national federation of French trade unions, hundreds of thousands of employees, young people, and retirees went on strike and protested in the streets of French cities Friday against Macron’s plan. The new retirement plan would raise the age of pension eligibility from 62 to 64 by 2030.
The strikes Saturday affected a variety of sectors of commerce across the country, including transportation, energy, garbage disposal, and agriculture. According to French news source Le Monde, the 2023 pension movement is one of the largest in French history, with approximately 3.5 million protestors in attendance at demonstrations in the last week, CGT reported.
According to CGT, another day of nationwide strikes and demonstrations is set for Wednesday, the day the pension plan will go to joint committee review in the French parliament.
