The French government on Wednesday launched formal proceedings to suspend access to the online platform of fast-fashion retailer Shein, following public outcry over the discovery of sex dolls with childlike features listed on its website. The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of e-commerce platforms and their content moderation practices.
According to a statement from France’s Minister of Economy, Roland Lescure, the suspension will remain in effect until Shein can demonstrate that all its content complies with French laws and regulations. Under France’s Penal Code, specifically Article 227-23, sharing or selling child sexual abuse material (CSAM), referred to as “pédopornographique,” is punishable by up to seven years in prison and a fine of €100,000.
The controversy started when Shein opened its first permanent walk-in store in Bazar de l’Hotel de Ville (BHV), Paris drawing crowds of shoppers and protesters. The Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) discovered product listings on Shein’s global platform that appeared to depict sex dolls resembling minors. Investigations have commenced by Paris prosecutors.
Shein through Quentin Ruffat, the company’s head of public affairs in France has promised to co-operate fully while speaking to RMC radio. The sex doll listings were widely condemned by the government and the public as potentially violating laws related to child protection and inciting public immorality.
In response, Shein has announced a global ban on the sale of sex dolls on its platforms as the company’s head of public affairs in France, Quentin Ruffat told a media outlet, “this suspension enables us to strengthen accountability and ensure every product meets our standards and legal obligations.”
Before the opening of the physical boutique in the heart of France’s capital, Shein had faced criticism from environmental groups, Paris City Hall, and the country’s prêt-à-porter industry. It has criticism concerning the harm caused to the environment with regards to fast fashion. The United Nations has cautioned that the fashion industry is “one of the world’s most polluting sectors, responsible for up to eight per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.”
Investigations have also shown that Shein suppliers’ workers face excessive work hours, 75-hour weeks and are paid per item. Due to this pay structure, the workers spend more hours working in order to earn a meaningful wage. These are breaches of fundamental labor principles such as a safe and healthy working environment and prohibitions against compulsory or forced labor as established by the International Labour Organization.
