British police arrested Peter Mandelson, former UK ambassador to the United States, on Monday on “suspicion of misconduct in public office” following allegations that he improperly shared sensitive government information with Jeffrey Epstein.
Metropolitan Police said they arrested a 72-year-old man in Camden, North London, for questioning as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. Officers executed search warrants at two addresses linked to the suspect. While police did not name the individual, reports indicate it was Mandelson, who was filmed while officers escorted him from his home. He was released on bail early Tuesday and was seen returning to his London home.
The inquiry comes after the US Justice Department released more than three million pages of documents relating to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.
Certain communications have suggested that Mandelson passed sensitive government information to Epstein during his tenure as the UK’s Business Secretary between 2008 and 2010. These include emails that appear to show Mandelson forwarding details of the then-prime minister Gordon Brown’s response to the global financial crisis and discussing policy matters such as proposals for a tax on bankers’ bonuses. One exchange appeared to confirm an impending eurozone bailout package a day before it was publicly announced. Several of the communications appear to have been sent after Epstein had already been convicted of sex offenses in the US.
Mandelson was dismissed as UK ambassador to the US on September 11, 2025, after Downing Street announced disclosures had emerged concerning his relationship with Epstein. Earlier this month, Mandelson resigned from the House of Lords following publication of the documents, though under parliamentary procedure he retains the title of Lord Mandelson. The government said on Monday it is working on legislation that would allow for the removal of his peerage.
The arrest has escalated pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The leader of the opposition, Kemi Badenoch, said Mandelson’s arrest “is the defining moment of Keir Starmer’s premiership.” She added, “Watching the man who he appointed to the highest position in our diplomatic service getting arrested by police, I think, is an image that’s going to stay with all of us for many, many years to come”.
Mandelson’s arrest comes days after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew of the British Royal Family, was arrested and released under investigation on suspicion of misconduct in public office linked to disclosures in the Epstein files. The UK government is currently considering removing Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of royal succession.
