The European Court of Human Rights on Thursday rejected the appeal of a German couple who did not send their children to school.

In 2012 the State Education Authority found that the couple “were deliberately and persistently refusing to send their children to school, thereby endangering the children’s best interests as they were growing up in a ‘parallel world.'” As a result, German authorities withdrew parts of the couple’s parental authority over the children. The couple complained about the decision, stating that it interfered with their “right to respect for family life under Article 8.”

The European Court of Human Rights found that “there were ‘relevant and sufficient’ reasons for the withdrawal of some parts of the parents’ authority and the temporary removal of the children from their family home.”
