Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reported on Thursday that gunmen have killed 150 civilians in an armed attack.
The attack in the Gida Kiremu district of western Ethiopia is suspected to have been committed by Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) a division of the banned Oromo Liberation Front according to the Commission. The state-appointed, but independent organization, confirmed that on the 18th of August, 150 local residents were killed, adding on to 60 civilians killed in a similar attack. The conflict in Ethiopia broke out in Tigray (northern Ethiopia) nine months ago and is beginning to spread to other regions.
However, the OLA has denied responsibility for the attacks, claiming that allegations are a “gross distortion of the facts on the ground.” The group proposes themselves to be fighting for the rights of the Omoro people. The escalating conflict in Tigray is an ongoing humanitarian crisis, which is now risking the trade agreement with the United States under the African Groth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), following sanctions placed by the US on Ethiopia earlier this year.
