US Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General Michael Horowitz on Monday released the results of his investigation into the possible Russian interference with the 2016 election, finding that the investigation was conducted legitimately but that there were problems with its implementation.

According to a DOJ statement, “During this review, the [Office of the Inspector General] examined more than one million documents that were in the DOJ’s and FBI’s possession and conducted over 170 interviews involving more than 100 witnesses.”

In the report, the Horowitz detailed various problems which occurred in the investigation, including the submission of reports to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC). “It is the case agent’s responsibility to ensure that statements contained in applications submitted to the FISC are ‘scrupulously accurate.’ As we discuss below, we found that the FBI failed to fulfill this obligation to the court.”

The report also called for action from the FBI to address the mistakes. FBI Director Christopher Wray detailed the FBI’s intentions to remedy this situation in a media statement.
