China was named Wednesday as one of the worst jailers of journalists in 2019, with 48 journalists arrested this year.
The report was compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which released a press statement detailing the basis for their investigation.
The report also cites Turkey, which imprisoned 47 journalists in 2019. Journalists were primarily being imprisoned for political reasons. “Politics was again the beat most likely to land journalists in jail, followed by human rights and corruption,” CPJ stated. The CPJ also outlined its methodology for determining distinctions between a journalist being declared missing, imprisoned or killed.
The CPJ has an instagram page, which details the journalists who have been oppressed and censored through imprisonment.
