Chilean President Sebastián Piñera declared a state of emergency Friday amid nationwide protests.
The protests began over a hike in subway prices, which has been defended by the president as a natural reaction to the rise of the dollar. The president has told the people of Chile that the government will look at the law and try to come to a favorable decision for all.
He finished his declaration by calling on the people of Santiago not to join in the violence. The protests have already resulted in 10 confirmed deaths, 62 people injured and more than 500 people detained.
The state of emergency can last up to 15 days.
