The Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT), a Chadian rebel group with the aim of overthrowing the government of Chad, announced on Saturday an end to its ceasefire with the government. The group alleged the government attacked one of its bases and killed 3 people, which it considers an act of war. The ceasefire had been in place since 2021
In 2021, FACT crossed Chad’s border with Libya and attacked a border post on the day of the presidential election to oppose Idriss Deby, the President of Chad at the time. Deby was killed in the conflict. After Deby’s death, his son Mahamat Idriss Deby, was declared the interim president. Afterwards, FACT declared a unilateral ceasefire.
Since becoming the interim president, Mahamat Idriss Deby has attempted to ease tensions with FACT and maintain a peaceful situation. For instance, he pardoned hundreds of FACT prisoners including those who were sentenced to life in prison and promoted peaceful negotiations. With FACT’s ceasefire with the Chad government ending, violence could again return to the country.
