The High Court of Justice of Catalonia provisionally on Tuesday suspended the decision of the regional government to delay upcoming parliamentary elections due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

This move was challenged before the court on the ground that it defies democracy. Until the matter is settled in the final hearing, elections stand to be conducted in February. However, since the matter is still pending before the court, the court may even take the decision to change the date.

The court has asked the Generalitat to inform the court about the precautionary measures that it plans to undertake while conducting the elections by January 21. In response to this, Minister Bernat Solé said that the government has taken all possible precautions and cannot undertake any additional precautions.

The court decision has received backlash from government spokesperson Meritxell Budó, who stated, “The health situation hinders the essential conditions to ensure a free electoral process.”

On the other hand, the Socialists called for accepting the decision of the court. Socialist Miquel Iceta said, “At the moment nothing can be done other than abiding by the judicial ruling and waiting until the court makes a final decision on this matter.”
