Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly Tuesday announced that Canada was imposing sanctions on 14 “close associates” of the Russian regime, including President Vladimir Putin’s two daughters.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Canada has imposed sanctions on over 750 individuals and entities. These sanctions have been imposed on individuals and entities from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus in response to military action in Ukraine.
Canada announced Tuesday new sanctions on 14 Russian individuals. The new sanctions include Russian oligarchs and their families, in addition to Putin’s daughters. In announcing these sanctions, the news release cited to a report issued by OSCE experts last week. The report found that Russia violated international humanitarian law and committed human rights abuses when invading Ukraine.
The news release stated that Canada would “continue to implement further measures” to hold Putin and Russian leadership accountable. Further, Canada would continue “to monitor the situation and coordinate actions with its partners in the international community to respond to the Russian regime’s barbaric acts.”
On the sanctions, Joly stated: “Canada continues to stand by the brave men and women fighting for their freedom in Ukraine. We will continue to impose severe costs on the Russian regime in coordination with our allies and will relentlessly pursue accountability for their actions. They will answer for their crimes.”
Canada joins the US and UK in imposing sanctions on Putin’s daughters. Both the US and UK imposed sanctions on Putin’s daughters during the week of April 3. On April 13, Russia announced reciprocal sanctions against US and Canadian officials in response to sanctions issued by the two countries against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
