British lawmakers on Tuesday voted to prevent Prime Minister Boris Johnson from taking the country out of the EU without a formal agreement, pushing Britain to call for a new election.

The lawmakers forced Johnson’s hand by voting by 328 to 301 to take control of Parliament away from the government and vote on legislation as soon as Wednesday that would block the prime minister from making good on his threat of a no-deal Brexit.

Under a 2011 law, the prime minister needs a two-thirds majority to secure a snap election, although it is possible that the government might try to legislate to set that provision aside, a move that would mean it needs only a simple majority.
