A UK Conservative Party MP was found guilty Monday of sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy.
Imran Ahmad Khan, an MP of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s ruling party was charged with forcing the teenager to consume alcohol before abusing him in 2008. The incident occurred before Khan became Wakefield MP, and at the time denied the charges. The victim chose not to proceed with the complaint until 2019 when he pursued the case.
Khan was elected as the first Conservative MP in Wakefield in 1932 before allegations resurfaced over misconduct.
During the trial, the prosecution gave details of how Khan “stood by the bunk bed” and touched him whilst he was in his pajamas. The victim’s evidence showed that almost 10 years after the assault he has been left “scared and shocked.” Additional evidence was provided by another victim who was sexually assaulted in his sleep after a party in Pakistan. Kept anonymous in court documents, the man said that Khan gave him a sleeping pill and had to “push him off him and tell him to stop.”
The jury accepted the victims’ evidence in addition to interviews with police about the incident.
Found guilty of sexual assault under section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, Khan awaits sentencing. The MP has continued to deny the charges and plans to appeal against the conviction, according to a statement made by his solicitors, but has since been expelled from the Conservative party, and will sit as an independent member. However, it will require 10% of voters to sign a petition to trigger a by-election for the “vacant” seat, for which Khan can still run.
