Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro signed an executive order Tuesday making it easier for people in Brazil to buy guns.
The order removes the requirement that persons seeking to purchase a gun must declare why they need the gun. It also loosens restrictions around owning guns. A person may now own up to four guns—up from the previous cap at two—and does not need to store the guns in a safe with a lock and key when there are children, adolescents or persons with mental disabilities in the home.
Additionally, a gun owner is now able to wait 10 years before renewing their permit, and the categories of persons who can purchase a gun have been expanded. Now business owners, gun collectors, hunters, those in rural areas and people who live in urban areas with high levels of violence are all able to buy guns.
The executive order also establishes the criteria and process for purchasing a gun: “Buyers must be at least 25 years old, take a course at a gun club, undergo a psychological exam and not have a criminal record.”
Bolsonaro has stated that the reasoning for expanding the gun laws in Brazil in this way is an attempt to counteract the number of homicides that take place in Brazil each year. With this new law, the argument is that people can take their protection into their own hands and will be better able to protect themselves.
