Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Wednesday the launch of Australia’s 2020 Defense Strategic Update and the 2024 Structure Plan. As a part of this plan, Australia will spend $186 million on expanding its military in the next decade.

Morrison began his speech by commending the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADF) for its actions during the bush fires and COVID-19. He also noted rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, some of which are due to the pandemic.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to properly fund defense, stating that the new 10-year funding model would exceed two percent of Australia’s GDP in 2020. The plan prioritizes the area ranging from the northeast Indian Ocean through southeast Asia, to Papua New Guinea and the southwest Pacific. There are three strategic objectives of the plan: (1) to shape Australia’s strategic environment, (2) to deter actions against Australia’s interests, and (3) to respond with military force as needed.

The government will invest almost $183 billion through the acquisition of up to 23 different classes of Navy and Army vessels. According to Morrison, this is the “biggest regeneration” of Australia’s Navy since World War II. The government will also provide $1.35 billion to enhance cybersecurity and assistance, provided through the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD).

The new program is anticipated to create thousands of jobs.
