Human rights organization Amnesty International sent an open letter to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Wednesday, requesting a meeting to discuss solutions to the country’s current human rights crisis.
For more than 40 years, Amnesty has reported on human rights violations in Mexico. Since the inauguration of the current president, there have been improvements in some areas, especially as related to disappeared individuals. However, Amnesty has stated that those efforts are not enough.
The organization has become increasingly concerned about speeches that were made by the president, as well as homicides, femicides, and the use of the National Guard to “thwart the passage of migrants and refugees.”
Executive director at Amnesty International Mexico, Tania Reneaum Panszi, has said that Amnesty’s open letter is a response to an invitation that was extended by the president while he was running for office. Panszi has stated,

López Obrador has not yet responded to the letter.It is important for the president to listen to our suggestions from civil society to put a stop to the human rights crisis in the country that sadly implies a high cost in terms of people’s lives and other grave human rights violations every day.
