Amnesty International condemned the Russian government on Sunday for its failure to answer questions about opposition politician Alexei Navalny’s death on the first anniversary of the anti-corruption activist’s demise.
On February 16, 2024, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) reported that Nalvany lost consciousness in the yard of the penal colony where authorities had transferred him. Despite the ambulance crew’s immediate efforts, resuscitation attempts allegedly failed. FSIN stated that investigators were looking into Navalny’s cause of death, but no answers have been provided to date.
Navalny’s death followed a campaign by Russian authorities to suppress his rights. In December 2023, officials informed Navalny’s lawyer that they had removed him from the official list of the penal colony where he was serving a 19-year jail sentence. Russian authorities refused to provide any information about his whereabouts.
Nalvany was the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), whose employees and associates have faced reprisals for their work including “administrative charges, police raids and house search, physical violence, and selective army conscription.” A Russian court even sentenced three lawyers for aiding Nalvany in the crime of “participating in an extremist organization.”
In 2020, Navalny was poisoned, but Russian authorities refused to open a criminal investigation. An independent investigative group suggested that Russia’s Federal Security Service agents were responsible. While Navalny recovered, authorities opened a criminal case accusing him of misappropriating donations from his supporters. FSIN later claimed he violated terms by failing to report to penitentiary authorities.
In 2021, Nalvany flew to Moscow and was arrested at the border control. Natalia Zviagina, Amnesty International’s Moscow Office Director, stated “Navalny’s arrest is further evidence that Russian authorities are seeking to silence him.”
A court in Moscow granted FSIN’s motion and sentenced Nalvany to 2 years and 5 months in prison. The authorities banned his foundation after labelling it “extremist.” In 2022, Navalny was sentenced to an additional 9 years for his political activism, including outspoken criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In 2023, Navalny was sentenced to an additional 10 years in a penal colony for the “extremist” related charges. That same year, Amnesty International stated that since his arrest, Russian authorities had failed to provide Navalny with adequate healthcare. Seven days after his death, Russian authorities announced they would release Navalny’s body exclusively for a secret burial. Agnés Callamar, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, stated, “Let there be no doubt. Aleksei Navalny’s death was caused by Russian authorities.”
