Amnesty International called Wednesday for Turkish and Kurdish forces to respect international humanitarian law in Syria.
The statement came after “[a] Turkish government spokesman said on Wednesday that the USA had given them the green light to carry out a military offensive against Kurdish forces.” Amnesty called for both Turkish and Kurdish forces to respect international humanitarian law by not attacking civilians. The organization also implored Turkish and Kurdish forces not to conduct “indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks.”
Amnesty noted that both of these forces “have a track record of carrying out indiscriminate attacks in Syria” and that, under international humanitarian law, there is an obligation to protect civilians.
