Amnesty International France called Monday for French authorities to stop the Bahri Tabuk, a commercial ship believed to be carrying weapons to Saudi Arabian forces in Yemen.
The Bahri Tabuk is suspected to be carrying an arms shipment from Canada, including various military vehicles to reinforce the Saudi Arabian forces in Yemen. The ship docked in Marseille and is expected to receive an additional arms shipment from France. This is the second such ship after the Bahri Yanbu, which picked up French arms in Le Havre earlier this month. Amnesty has stated that they believe such shipments to be violations of Article 6.3 of the UN Arms Trade Treaty. France is a current signatory to the treaty, while Canada is attempting to position itself to sign the treaty in the near future.
Under the Arms Trade Treaty, nations are not permitted to trade arms with any party where there is a risk of such arms being employed in the commission of war crimes. The Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen have been widely reported to be committing war crimes in Yemen, including attacks against Yemeni civilians. Congress passed a joint resolution last month condemning US involvement in Yemen, which President Donald Trump vetoed.
