Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced on Sunday during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly’s Summit of the Future an ambitious initiative to create a Bektashi sovereign state within the heart of Tirana. Speaking from the prestigious hall where global leaders convene, Rama emphasized the importance of this initiative in promoting religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence in a region often marred by conflict.
In his speech, Rama highlighted Albania’s unique position as a small country that has set a powerful example for the world. He pointed out that Albanians are known for their efforts to protect common humanity, citing their role in saving Jewish lives during the Holocaust. Reflecting on Albania’s pride in giving the world Mother Teresa, Rama stated, “Not all of us can do big things, but we can all do small things with big love.” This principle, he noted, is the foundation upon which Albania stands as it seeks to transform the center of the Bektashi Order into a peaceful hub of coexistence.
According to reports, the proposed Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order, envisioned by Muslim cleric Edmond Brahimaj, also known as Baba Mondi, would occupy approximately 27 acres in Tirana and function similarly to the Vatican. Baba Mondi expressed his vision for the new state, stating, “God does not forbid anything; that is why he gave us minds,” emphasizing his intent to create a welcoming environment without strict lifestyle rules. He further reassured potential residents that “all decisions will be made with love and kindness.” Baba Mondi also addressed questions about citizenship, stating that it would be limited to members of the clergy and those involved in the administration, akin to the Vatican’s model. He reiterated the goal of the new state as a spiritual entity focused on promoting peace and moderation, allowing Bektashi followers worldwide to practice their faith without interference. He expressed optimism about the international community’s support for this initiative, emphasizing the need for moderate voices in the fight against extremism.
Additionally, Albanian Prime Minister Rama voiced his support for the initiative, highlighting its importance for the nation’s identity. “We should take care of this treasure, which is religious tolerance and which we should never take for granted,” he said. Rama framed the creation of this sovereign enclave as a message against negative stereotypes associated with Muslims, asserting, “An avowedly moderate Islamic microstate would send a strong message: Do not let the stigma of Muslims define who Muslims are.”
The new state aims to reflect Albania’s long-standing tradition of coexistence among various faiths, building on the Bektashi Order’s history as a unifying force in the region. While the initiative is still in its early stages, both Baba Mondi and Prime Minister Rama hope it will foster a spirit of peace and acceptance in Albania and beyond.
