Suspected attackers with knives injured three people Sunday during a roadshow by the National Conference (NC) party in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, according to local media.

In the aftermath of the incident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, senior NC leader Javed Ahmad Rana told ANI:

The government claims that there is peace in Jammu and Kashmir. The incident shows how valid that claim is. We have never seen anything like the incident that happened today. Farooq Abdullah and the whole National Conference leadership were also present there. Suddenly, two goons came and stabbed two people. Every person is concerned since Article 370 was abrogated.
The NC leader further expressed concern over the incident, describing it as a “security lapse” that warrants a thorough investigation and calling for the individuals responsible for the attack to be immediately arrested. Rana further showed surprise at how people carrying knives were able to gain access to the rally venue.

Jammu and Kashmir used to be an autonomous state of India but was converted to a union territory after India’s Parliament revoked the special status given to the state in 2019 by abrogating Article 370 of the Constitution of India.

NC President Farooq Abdullah and the party’s Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency candidate, Mian Altaf Ahmad, were present at the NC election rally, which was conducted on Sunday in the Mendhar region of Poonch district in light of the upcoming Anantnag Lok Sabha elections on May 25.

Two groups engaged in a violent altercation during the rally, which resulted in three youths sustaining knife injuries. The rally proceeded without any interruption. The police have launched an investigation after registering a case about the incident. The officials have not made any arrests thus far.

The Indian general election is underway, spanning seven phases from April 19 to June 1, 2024. The election will determine the Members of Parliament for the country’s lower house, Lok Sabha, which determines who will control the prime minister’s office and union government.
